If you have grown up in Delhi or NCR, chances are you’ve either visited or at least heard of the National Zoological Park, better known as the Delhi Zoo. For decades, it has remained one of the city’s most loved attractions for families, especially those with young children. Situated close to Old Fort (Purana Qila), this green oasis gives visitors the chance to witness exotic animals, birds, and reptiles while enjoying a day outdoors.
Recently, I planned a zoo outing for my son’s birthday along with his friends, and the experience gave me several valuable insights. Visiting the Delhi Zoo can be enjoyable and educational, but only if you know what to expect. Without some basic preparation, the trip can quickly turn stressful. In this guide, I’ll share everything you need to know before you plan your visit.
1. Book Tickets Online in Advance
Although tickets are available at the counter, it’s smarter to book online through the official website (nzpnewdelhi.gov.in). This avoids long queues, especially during peak season when crowds swell. Do note that tickets can only be booked one day prior, not weeks ahead. For weekends or holidays, secure your slot as early as possible since tickets often sell out quickly.
2. Best Time to Visit the Delhi Zoo
Weekends are the most convenient for families, but they also draw the heaviest crowds. If weekends are your only option, aim to reach right at opening time (8:30 am in winter, 9:00 am in summer). Early mornings not only allow you to explore with fewer people around but also ensure animals are more active and visible before the midday heat.
If your schedule is flexible, weekdays are far more relaxed and give you time to enjoy without constant jostling.
3. Consider Hiring a Private Buggy
The zoo spreads across nearly 176 acres, which means a lot of walking is involved. While public buggies are available, they require waiting at designated stops and competing for space with other visitors. This often leads to wasted time and frustration.
A much better alternative is booking a private buggy:
- 14-seater: ₹800
- 20-seater: ₹1100
Private buggies allow you to choose your route, stop wherever you like, and avoid the struggle of finding seats. However, note that this option is usually available only on weekdays or early mornings on weekends.
4. No Outside Food Allowed
Unlike in the past, there are currently no food stalls operating inside the zoo. On top of that, carrying your own snacks is prohibited, as it encourages feeding animals, which is strictly not allowed. Security checks at the entrance are strict, and any food items will be confiscated.
👉 Pro tip: Feed children properly before you enter to prevent hunger-driven tantrums.
5. Carry Ample Water
The good news is that water bottles are allowed. With the amount of walking involved, you’ll need plenty of hydration, especially during hot weather. Carry lightweight bottles, and if you book a private buggy, you can leave them there while exploring.
6. Plan Your Route Using the Zoo Map
The Delhi Zoo is home to a wide variety of animals – from tigers, lions, and elephants to migratory birds and reptiles. But covering the entire place in one visit can be overwhelming. To maximize your experience:
- Download or study the zoo map in advance.
- Mark the animals you absolutely want to see.
- Skip enclosures that don’t interest you to save time and energy.
Most buggy drivers are knowledgeable and will also guide you to the popular spots.
7. Dress for Comfort
A day at the zoo means hours outdoors, so dress accordingly. Comfortable walking shoes are a must – leave the heels at home! Light, breathable clothing works best. If you’re visiting with toddlers, carry a pram or stroller. This will save your arms and make moving around easier.
8. Remember the Weekly Holiday
Don’t make the mistake of turning up on a Friday – the Delhi Zoo remains closed every Friday for maintenance. Plan your visit on any other day of the week.
9. Toilets Are Below Standard
One of the downsides of the zoo is its poorly maintained washrooms. Prepare accordingly by ensuring everyone uses the bathroom before leaving home. Carry hand sanitizer and tissues, as you may not find them readily available inside.
Why the Delhi Zoo Is Still Worth Visiting
Despite a few inconveniences, the National Zoological Park continues to be a fantastic outing option for families. Children especially love seeing animals they’ve only read about in books. It’s educational, fun, and an affordable day trip.
The lush greenery of the zoo also makes it a refreshing escape from the city’s chaos. Whether it’s watching the majestic white tiger, observing migratory birds in winter, or just enjoying a buggy ride under the trees, the Delhi Zoo offers experiences that no mall or gaming zone can replicate.
Final Tips Before You Go
- Buy tickets online a day prior.
- Visit early in the morning for the best experience.
- Book a private buggy if you’re going in a group.
- Eat before entering since food isn’t allowed.
- Carry enough water, sunscreen, and caps during summers.
- Prepare for limited toilet facilities.
If you keep these points in mind, your visit will be smooth, enjoyable, and memorable. Whether you’re introducing your child to animals for the first time or simply reliving your own childhood visits, the Delhi Zoo is an experience every Delhiite should have.
